This article examines the theoretical foundations for increasing the export potential of agricultural holdings within the context of the concept of sustainable development of the agro-industrial complex. The relevance of the study is determined by intensifying global competition in world food markets, the transformation of international trade relations, and growing demands for the environmental, social, and economic sustainability of agricultural production. In the context of the expanding export orientation of the agro-industrial complex of the Russian Federation, the formation of scientifically based approaches to the development of the export potential of large integrated agricultural structures—agroholdings—possessing significant production, investment, and logistics resources, is of particular importance. The paper analyzes modern scientific approaches to the interpretation of the category "export potential of an enterprise" and identifies the main stages in the evolution of scientific ideas about this concept. Key methodological approaches to the interpretation of export potential, including resource-product, market-competitive, system-managerial, and sustainable-institutional approaches, are systematized. The article substantiates the need to integrate sustainable development principles into the operating strategy of agricultural holdings as a key factor in building long-term competitiveness in international agri-food markets. The article also examines the characteristics of agricultural holdings as entities engaged in foreign economic activity and the institutional and regulatory frameworks for their operation in the Russian Federation. A conceptual model of the vulnerabilities of agricultural holdings' export potential and tools for neutralizing them is proposed, taking into account the interrelationships between natural, biological, market, commodity, and institutional constraints. It concludes that it is necessary to develop a comprehensive methodological framework for increasing the export potential of agricultural holdings based on sustainable development principles, ensuring the long-term competitiveness of the agricultural sector and the sustainable development of the agro-industrial complex of the Russian Federation.
